Job Description

Title: High School Principal

Status: Administrator, Tier I, 260 Days

Qualifications:

Required

  • Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction or related field
  • Valid Administrative License: High School Principal 9-12
  • Minimum of three (3) years successful teaching experience
  • Successful history of leading people, managing budgets, and building an ethical, professional, and committed team.
  • Ability to successfully work with diverse internal and external groups
  • Experience developing a climate that is safe, goal oriented with high expectations
  • Ability to recruit and retain students in the high school age bracket
  • Ability to work with middle school leaders ensuring a seamless transition for students from middle school to high school
  • Evidence of team building ability
  • Ability to comprehend student achievement data as it relates to academic performance and utilizes the data to lead the high school to improve rating on the Ohio Report Card

Preferred 

  • Five years successful teaching experience in public education
  • Previous High School Principal experience or building level leadership experience preferred with evidence to support student achievement
  • Exhibits transformative behavior and provides evidence of leading a school to higher achievement
  • Evidence of strong discipline capacity that leads to improved behavior and improved test scores
  • Ability to market and communicate the attributes of the school to internal and external audiences on an on-going basis
  • Ability and evidence of seeking external funding opportunities to enhance the high school experience

Reports to: Chief of Staff & Transformation Officer

Job Goal: To use leadership and administrative skills in promoting the maximum education development of each high school student.

Essential Functions:

  1. Abides by adopted Board policies, district rules, and procedures.
  2. Meets all procedural deadlines.

Collaborative Instructional Leadership:

  1. Provides leadership in implementing, sustaining and evaluating a standards-based curriculum consistent with the district’s goals and objectives.
  2. Demonstrates the ability to utilize data to drive curricular and instructional decisions and practices in the classroom.
  3. Establishes expectations for and monitors the effectiveness of the interdisciplinary team concept and the interdisciplinary team process as it applies to all teachers:
    1. Understands the use of differentiated instruction to promote student achievement; monitors its implementation in classrooms and evaluates its efficacy.
    2. Monitors the design and delivery of the standards-based curriculum using the walk-through process.
  4. Promotes a positive learning environment:
    1. Establishes the underlying values of the high school.
    2. Integrates instructional goals into all facets of the high school operation.
    3. Establishes high expectations for performance and monitors the performance of those expectations.
  5. Inspires teacher commitment:
    1. Shares research that supports the importance of the teacher in the learning process.
    2. Shares current educational research pertinent to learning and implements/models such research as appropriate.
    3. Facilitates continuous capacity building and professional growth in himself/herself and in the entire community supervised.

Management:

Staff Personnel:

  1. Screens, interviews, and recommends employment and contractual status of staff.
  2. Supervises all administrative, professional, and support staff assigned to the high school.
  3. Ensures all staff meets state mandated certifications and training requirements.
  4. Provides leadership in the selection, assignment, and evaluation of administrative, professional, and support staff for the high school.
  5. Prepares master schedule.
  6. Supervises the athletic director/assistant principals.
  7. Evaluates and supervises all personnel.
  8. Assigns staff within building to particular teaching or support positions.
  9. Responsible for scheduling and conducting regular staff meetings. 1
  10. Coordinates all extra-curricular activities as appropriate.

Pupil Personnel:

  1. Establishes rules and sets the tone for student discipline in accordance with school board policy and current school law.
  2. Makes final decision on suspension of students. Recommends to superintendent on expulsion of students.
  3. Participates in building IAT team meetings and attends required IEP meetings.

Public Relations:

  1. Develops and maintains positive parent relations.
  2. Supports the school/community organizations.
  3. Develops and maintains positive written and verbal communication with the community.
  4. Encourages staff to maintain positive relationship with community.

Resource Management:

  1. Prepares a school budget which will adequately support school programs.
  2. Oversees the ordering and purchasing of materials, supplies, and equipment.
  3. Supervises student activity accounts.
  4. Develops long range plans to address building needs.

Building Operations:

  1. Assesses the general conditions and needs of the building and grounds and reports same to appropriate support staff.
  2. Works with custodial and maintenance staff to ensure the proper cleanliness, repair and safety of the building and grounds.

  1. Participates in local, state, and national professional organizations.
